Star connection method (Y connection method):

Definition: Connect the starting point (or tail end) of the three stator windings of a motor together to form a common point, commonly referred to as the star point or neutral point. Then, the other end (or head end) of each winding is connected to the three phase lines of the three-phase power supply.

Provide high voltage, suitable for situations that require high voltage power supply.

Due to the series effect of windings, it helps to reduce the magnitude of current and minimize line losses.

The current is evenly distributed among the three phases, and the waveforms of voltage and current are relatively stable, which is beneficial for the stable operation of the motor.

For motors with higher power, the Y-voltage reduction starting method can be used during light load starting, which means connecting them in a star shape to reduce the starting current, and then switching to a delta connection after the motor starts for normal operation.

Triangle connection (Δ connection):

Definition: The windings of each phase are connected end-to-end to form a closed triangular circuit.

The motor phase voltage is equal to the line voltage.

The line current is equal to three times the phase current at the root.

It is usually suitable for motors with higher power, especially for more stable power output under rated load.

Selection of Motor Wiring Methods

Low voltage high-power motors (>3 kW): The star delta starting method is generally used to start the motor to reduce the starting current and avoid damage to transformers or other equipment.

Three phase asynchronous induction motor: suitable for three-phase asynchronous induction motors of 3KW and below. The star connection method can provide higher voltage and lower current, which is beneficial for the stable operation of the motor.

Single phase motor: The wiring method varies depending on the model, and it is necessary to connect according to the wiring method indicated on the motor nameplate to ensure the normal operation of the motor.

Wiring precautions

Before wiring, it is necessary to confirm the function and color of the motor's wiring terminals and power lines to avoid incorrect wiring that may cause the motor to malfunction or be damaged.

When wiring, ensure that the power is cut off and wear insulated gloves to ensure safety.

After wiring, the motor should be checked for normal operation, and any abnormal situations should be promptly resolved.
